spinning, playing, flowing on.

Every movement in my world* moves smoothly, flows from one moment to the next. Each shift and distribution of energy I create then obligates me to take responsibility for the change I must follow through with it. Standing up from a chair, setting something down on a table, giving a massage: I create a certain collection of energy and movement and dynamics and it is imperative to own that and know its weight. The tip of the finger affects the opposite eye; the side of my leg affects my shoulder blade; my breath up high send panic to my head and a breath down low helps my soles find the earth.

I think this is why I love poi so much right now. It’s centered and weighted but almost effortless yet it leaves you exhilarated and wanting more. The movement within the system can be felt throughout your body and into the ground and air around you. Moving art that involves your whole body and pulls the audience, even if it’s just yourself in the mirror, into an ecstatic trance.

(Or maybe it’s just that I feel like Aang when I’m spinning poi. That might be it.)

*my world is defined as the area of energy around me, the people and objects and energy I directly and easily affect.
